However, this degree of color blindness is incredibly rare. Most color-blind people can actually see most colors. They just may appear differently than they do to those who can see the full spectrum of color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, what does a color-blind person see, exactly? We\u2019ll answer this and some other common questions in this article. But first, let\u2019s further explore what color blindness is, along with its causes, symptoms, and treatments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Blindness Definition: What Is It?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Color blindness, also known as color vision deficiency (CVD), is a condition that makes it harder for a person to see color or perceive the difference between colors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Color blindness occurs when one or more of the cones (cells in your retinas that detect color) in your eyes don\u2019t work as they should.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it hard for your eyes to detect colors as they usually appear.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Blindness Symptoms<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Symptoms of color blindness vary by intensity. Someone with mild symptoms may not even know they have a color deficiency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you notice any of the symptoms below, make an appointment for an eye exam and\/or color vision test. When this happens, it\u2019s considered a congenital condition\u2014a condition present from birth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When color blindness is passed down, it\u2019s inherited as a recessive gene on the X chromosome. That\u2019s why it\u2019s more prominent in males\u2014they only have one X chromosome that would need the trait, whereas women have two. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colourblindawareness.org\/colour-blindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Around 1 in 12 men and 1 in 200 women<\/a> are color blind.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, some people may develop issues with color later in life. Some causes of color blindness include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Diseases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Drug side effects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exposure to certain chemicals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Injury to the eye or brain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who Is at Risk for Color Blindness?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are certain health conditions and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warbyparker.com\/learn\/eye-disorders-and-eye-diseases\">eye diseases<\/a> that make you more likely to develop color blindness, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alzheimer\u2019s disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Chronic alcoholism<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Diabetes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glaucoma<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leukemia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Macular degeneration<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parkinson\u2019s disease<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sickle cell anemia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are There Different Types of Color Blindness?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes\u2014there are multiple forms of color blindness. The main types are red-green color blindness, blue-yellow color blindness, and total color blindness. People with this type of color blindness only see shades of grey.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Color Blindness Treatments<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For most forms of color blindness, there are no treatments that can fully restore an individual\u2019s ability to see color normally. But there are some options your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.warbyparker.com\/learn\/optometrist-vs-ophthalmologist\">optometrist or ophthalmologist<\/a> can recommend to alleviate some of the everyday inconveniences caused by color blindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Glasses and Contacts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are specific glasses and even contact lenses for color blindness. These apps can describe the color of objects around you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before trying any treatment for color blindness, consult your eye doctor to determine the best options for your specific condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can Color Blindness Be Cured?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No. There\u2019s currently no cure for inherited color blindness, as that would require repairing genes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, for those who develop color blindness later in life, there may be solutions. For example, some individuals may develop color deficiencies after taking certain medicines. If that\u2019s the case, quitting or changing your medications may help your color vision return.
